Colin Woodard really makes history come alive. Clearly having done a lot of research into the lives and activities of the men who became the infamous pirates of the early 18th century, Woodard breathes the life of dramatic narrative into what might otherwise be a dry recitation of facts. This...

Fun read. To be read only once. Probably good time pass material for the journeys.
But to be only bought if you no other good book to read. I bought it because I was in flow of Pirate of Caribbean movie.

Now all ye jolly sailors (argh!) that sail the
Western Sea,/ An' all ye jolly buccaneers a warnin'
take from me,/ Steer clear o' lofty skull and
bones, for me they left well-spent./ For one stole
all me cargo up, an' left me broke an' bent./
Yo, heave ho! Round the capstan go! Black rebels
wi' a will./ Round the Bahamas them
brazen pirates flow until they've empt' your till.

Clearly having done a lot of research into the lives and activities of the men who became the infamous pirates of the early 18th century, Woodard breathes the life of dramatic narrative into what might otherwise be a dry recitation of facts. This book is wonderful, with interwoven plot lines that jump right out of the pages of history.

A long book.. the main reason i dont like it is the fact that the author leans more towards the guy that brought pirates to their down fall..

I listened to the audio edition of this for a couple of weeks. In some ways, I wish that there had been an edited version, instead of having to listen to 383 pages worth of "the 300 ton sloop this" and "the 400 ton frigate captained by Bob Smith" over and over again. But then again, there is an awful lot of ground to cover when discussing pirates in the eighteenth century and the author does an admirable job of focusing on the key players and taking the reader through the events and politics of the time and region. This is a real eye-opener for anyone interested in the subject.

I am currently searching for the definitive history of North American Piracy...this is pretty close to the best so far! I love history, as have an MA of British History, and now I wish I had done mine on this topic...

An excellently written history of the caribbean's most notorious pirates, but beyond that it gives the reader a strong understanding of the sailor's life in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Understanding the scope and danger of European mercantile culture gives one a whole new understanding of this era.
