Hal is not like the regular Skandians, he is an inventor. So, when he goes into the brotherband training, he finds out he is a natural leader.

- Mikkel: Hal's father, died on a raid when Hal was a child.
- Barat Tumansky: A rather surly man who likes to disagree with things and hinder important plans, only to take credit for them later.
- Thorn: A friend of Hal's father who has only one arm and is Hal's mentor of sorts.
- Erak Starfollower: Sea wolf, oberjarl of Skandia.
- Karina: Hal's mother, she is Araulen and considered a beauty.
- Stig: Hal's best friend and first mate on the Heron.
- Wolfwind: Erak's Wolfship... also known as his pride and joy.
- Lydia Demarek: A young woman of extraordinary talent who helps several important plans work out. Also, Barat seems to think she likes him. (He's quite wrong.)
- Zavac: Dirty pirate thief. The antagonist of the series. selfish and arrogant!
- Ingvar: A rather short-sided but extremely strong boy, and extremely devoted to Hal... he is part of the Heron's crew.
