In the Name of Identity: Violence and the Need to Belong

One of the best books I've read, very deep ideas and a true analysis of the identity problem each and everyone might face one way or another. I've read the Arabic translation of the original French, and it was excellent, just like all the other translated books of Amin Maalouf

I found this book both readable and philosophically sophisticated. Maalouf's ideas about the violent nature of aligning oneself too closely with only one strand of one's identity carries a lot of weight in light of Islamic extremism and the U.S. jingoistic patriotism. I highly recommend this book.

I was tempted to read Samuel Selvon's 'Lonely Londoners' after watching Horace Ove's 1974 film 'Pressure' . The film was greatly influenced by Lonely Londoners. Horace Ove is one of Britain's first black feature films and remains very much a product of its time. But over 20 years later it continues to provide an important dialogue on issues that are still extremely pertinent today. The DVD includes an excellent documentary of a lecture (given in 1969 by eminent American author and political commentator James Baldwin, accompanied by comedian and author Dick Gregory, called 'Baldwin's Nigger' - a must see, full of quick-witted, powerful and provocative statements which hit home even today.
