Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

by Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett

Pratchett (of Discworld fame) and Gaiman (of Sandman fame) may seem an unlikely combination, but the topic (Armageddon) of this fast-paced novel is old hat to both. Pratchett's wackiness collaborates with Gaiman's morbid humor; the result is a humanist delight to be savored and reread again and again. You see, there was a bit of a mixup when the Antichrist was born, due in part to the... (read more)

Overview: Groups

Crossgenre 93 books / 31 members / 53 posts I read alot of literature that cross boundaries. Is it horror or science fiction. True "literature" or genre. I want to create a list of books that are hard to define but good nonetheless. Also graphic novels are welcomed.
The Ankh-Morpork Auxiliary Pratchett Society 93 books / 273 members / 322 posts Are you a fan of the honourable Terry Pratchett? Well then, The Ankh-Morpork Auxiliary Pratchett Society is the group for you! At least we're pretty certain it is. We'll find out I suppose. Discworld is of course terribly popular with Pratchett fans, but our group will focus on any of his works.
Favorite Fantasy 929 books / 1411 members / 2187 posts Let fellow Shelfarians know what you consider good fantasy novels.
fiction effect 86 books / 132 members / 698 posts This group generally attracts those interested in writers and writing somewhat outside the mainstream, writing that experiments with the language and/or does not shy away from difficult topics/truths. We have a keen interest in discussing current trends in narrative, exploring works from some of the hottest small presses (and the big ones, too, though our affinity for independent and university presses is stronger), and peeling back the wax that has been applied to everyday life. Many of us are writers ourselves or, at minimum, harbor an interest in writing.

For a fairly comprehensive list of small presses, go to:

BookClub 24 books / 8 members / 8 posts A group of women in their 30-40's in Portland, OR who like to get together to discuss books.
Fantasy and Sci-fi Fanatics 997 books / 1056 members / 1023 posts I am personally addicted to fantasy and sci-fi and I created this group for people to discuss Fantasy and Sci-fi books that they have read.

I have found myself, more often than not, searching for a really good fantasy or sci-fi book, but to no avail. Starting a group not only enables me, and you, to find great books, but it also is a great way to discuss likes and dislikes about these books.

Just a warning, I will also put realistic-fiction books on the group shelf if I feel that they are as good as a fantasy or sci-fi book. MEOW!!!!!

***NOTICE***
If you are a member, or just a random person, please put any sci-fi or fantasy book that you *LOVE* on the group shelf, please!

Another thing, plez post discussions or reply to one, i'd love to hear your opinions.
ROFLMAO 7 books / 8 members / 3 posts For those who like books that are comic in nature, or funny, books that will make you REALLY LAUGH!

ROFLMAO = Rolling On Floor Laughing My Ass Off!

=D
Bryan's Book Club 44 books / 53 members / 99 posts This group is for anyone who wants to join my quasi book club. I'll list what we are currently reading and we can all talk about it. This club will focus on literature and science fiction with a dab of fantasy too. We will read short books, long ones, and sometimes a whole series, depending on my mood. I have around 500 unread books, so we have lots to choose from, just check out my shelf for details.
libraries and librarians 297 books / 414 members / 190 posts librarians, directors, library assistants, library school students.. anyone who works (or will be working) in a library! (or those who just enjoy libraries)
"Hey! What's so funny!?!" 165 books / 489 members / 338 posts I need more funny in my life, Hey, who doesn't?

So lets talk about the funny, witty, hilarious stuff we've read. Any kind of funny -puns, wordplay, dry wit, Calvin & Hobbes, sci-fi, fantasy, politics, YA -- if it tickles your funny bone, let me know about it, because I'm sure to end up reading it!

Brilliant Babes (And Dudes) Who Read Selectively 635 books / 167 members / 7508 posts So, what makes you a selective reader? If you like Dan Brown, Danielle Steele, Nicholas Sparks, or similar works, you MAY not be into this club. We are a group of intelligent persons who love both thought-provoking literature and quality brain candy. Actually, I mainly started it for myself and my friends, but anybody can apply if you think you're down with the Brilliant Babes--just send someone a note explaining why YOU think you are a brilliant babe (or dude) who reads selectively. This is a super-casual group. Anybody can suggest a book to read, anybody can add books to the reading list. We welcome any and all intelligent book discussion (not to mention whining about books we hated or gushing about books we loved). And don't worry if you have a really embarrassing book on your shelves...we all have skeletons in the closet.

To ask for an invite please DO NOT use the admin message box, leave a note on the profile pages of either rob or Suze...we will get back to you as soon as we can...thanks for your patience...and if you insist on asking for an invite via the group admin message box you will be ignored...so don't. Also, please remember that, although we TRY to get to everyone's requests in a timely manner, we do have other responsibilities that sometimes delay us from looking at your shelves. Your patience will be rewarded

A note about being snobs: As hard as it is to believe, with all of the nice people here on Shelfari, we get an e-mail once every week or two saying that we are snobs. That really just depends on your definition of a snob. Yes, this is a private group. Yes, we jokingly call ourselves brilliant. Yes, we have rather defined reading tastes that cut out a lot of mass-market fiction. Does that truly make us snobs? We hand-picked many members of our initial group around what we like to read or think we'd like to read. I don't think this makes us so much snobs as "people who want to discuss the kind of stuff that they like to read and don't care to discuss stuff that they don't like to read." (shrugs) We're pretty accepting. So, before sending us mean e-mails, see above for the joining process. And just remember: If you don't make it in, you probably haven't read the same books that we've all read and we'd have nothing to talk about!

A special note from the admin: We want everyone to have a great time here. All we expect is that everyone plays nice! Good-humored sarcasm is in; putting down or harassing our members is not, and we won't hesitate to remove a repeat offender from the group.

Note on the threads: please feel free to go back and resurrect any of the earlier threads that you find interesting...

Welcome to Across The Pond!

Do you ever find yourself suddenly walking silly walks or humming a certain Lumberjack tune? Do you scurry to the kitchen at noon for ladyfingers and herbal tea? Do you read literature from or about Tudor or Regency periods? Are you constantly flipping to BBC America to check for new episodes of Dr. Who, Robin Hood, or MI-5? Did you love Braveheart, Pride and Prejudice, or the Harry Potter movies? Do you ever suddenly find yourself speaking in a British accent using the words "bloke" or "codswallop" from time to time? Or maybe you just feel you were born in the wrong country? This group was made for anyone who feels a special connection to the geography, history, culture, and traditions of the U.K. Discussions are open to everyone and can be about anything from English literature, your favourite Beatle, or how you spent your summer vacation touring famous castles. Whether the discussions are serious and thoughful or silly and playful, have fun! *For any Shelfarian who has stumbled upon this group out of curiosity, please feel free to join us (especially you Brit's!)!*
