Penny Alistair, a junior, sings at the Nantucket High School graduation. She and her twin brother Hobby along with Penny's boyfriend, Jake and Demeter Castle are at some parties for graduates. Penny and Demeter leave the group and when Penny returns she is acting crazy. As the only one who hasn't been drinking, she drives and crashes. Penny dies and Hobby is in a coma for several days. Zoe, their mother can't believe her talented daughter is gone. Hobby will need the whole summer, and more to recover from his injuries and won't be playing football his senior year. Demeter turns even more to alcohol to blot out the guilt she feels. She told Penny something that made Penny lose control just before the accident. Jordan Randolph, Jake's father, decides that a move to Australia will be the answer to the problems of his family. His wife has spent most of the past four years in her infant son's room after the baby died from SIDS. She blames Jordan for their son's death. Jordan turned to Zoe for comfort and companionship, but now that Penny is dead, Zoe doesn't want Jordan near her. The teens and adults continue to deal with the aftermath of Penny's death in different ways and Hobby finally learns the truth of his sister's life and why she didn't try to prevent the accident when he reads her journal and when Demeter tells Hobby what she had said to Penny the night of the accident. Ava, Jordan's wife, stays in Australia and tells Jordan and Jake to return to Nantucket and to Zoe.
