“Elin Hilderbrand has created YET another spectacular novel with delightful characters and amazing descriptions of Nantucket Island. The descriptions of the landscape, island and the town itself will provide a mini vacation for readers. The characters in SUMMERLAND definitely carried the plot, and they had some issues that readers will be able to relate with.
Zoe Alistar is the main character and she is a likable one at that! Zoe is a single mother of twins Penny & Hobby. The twin’s father passed away while Zoe was pregnant with the twins. We meet the Randolph family who consists of Jordan, Ava and their son Jake. This family is reeling from the loss of Jordan and Ava’s 8 week old Ernie who dies of SIDS. We are introduced to Al and Lyn Castle and their lonely, teen daughter Demeter who feels like a misfit and has a drinking problem. These families all have secrets that bring them together and that also will tear them apart but most of all this story is about overcoming tragedy!
This is truly a compelling, heartfelt story about reclaimed friendship, tragedy, loss and love! On one particular evening in June, the Nantucket high school students gathered for a bonfire on the beach as a celebration to graduation, which ended in terrible tragedy. A horrible car crash in which the driver is left dead, another passenger left in a coma, and the other two barely have a scratch. Everyone on Nantucket is wondering what happened before Penny took the wheel of that jeep? Why was she so upset? As the summer unfolds, we discover startling truths which are revealed about the survivors, along with secrets, broken promises and broken hearts.
What I like most about this novel is that instead of chapters Summerland unfolds from each of the characters' and the townspeople's viewpoints. Through flashbacks, we learn how everyone ended up where they are today. Important facts about the individual people and their families are revealed. Eventually their deepest and most closely guarded secrets are exposed. It is only after the ugly facts are brought to light that the healing process can finally begin.
Elin Hilderbrand delivers an emotional, captivating story about reclaimed friendship as she portrays that even after sorrow, love can still be found. This remarkable novel has colorful characters, a powerful story with a good message, and picture-perfect scenery. Beautifully written, and highly recommended!
Read this one – it is great!! Until the next review I say … Happy reading my friends :)”
