- Shadow: The main character, Shadow is a convicted criminal who plans on keeping his head down when he is released. However, upon his release a bizarre chain of events with a supernatural spin changes his plans as he becomes involved in a war between the Gods of old and some new usurpers.
- Laura: Shadow's wife. His whole time in prison, Shadow longs to get back to her.
- Mr. Wednesday: Shadow's new boss, who hires him soon after his release and seems to have some supernatural powers.
