Strange and wonderful book

I found this book by chance, read it, and found it deeply twisted and mysterious in a way that very much appealed to me.
It had a main character with whom I actually sympathised for his misfortunes, which is saying something. The villains were cardboard to the point of being completely tongue-and-cheek, which balanced out all the dark and weirdness of the setting. This is one of those books where you can't predict the plot very easily because the author has obviously taken pains to make it a Nothing-Is-As-It-Seems book, a style that Neil Gaiman pulled off very well.
I really can't do Neverwhere justice without running through the entire plot, giving meaty character descriptions, and possibly typing the entire thing up. If Neverwhere sounds at all interesting, read it.

Neverwhere is the haunting story of a man, unhappy with his life, who suddenly finds himself living a new life. This life is an alternate version of the town he already lives in, yet there is wonderful and deadly magic surrounding him at all times along with creatures who we do not see in the "real" world. It is this land to which he ultimately escapes to..a land in the sewers and underground of London, but the question is...can he get back to his old life which he once found so boring.

This wonderful novel once again examines a common question posed in Gaiman's other works...if we had the chance to escape a life that we call boring, would we like the alternative or ultimately want our boring lives back and would we find that there really not so boring afterall.

There is also a mini-series available on DVD of Neverwhere, but I have not seen it yet. But I highly, HIGHLY recommend this wonderful book!

I really enjoyed the Anansi Boys so when I was looking for another book to read, I came across Neverwhere. Neil Gaiman is a great writer. I found myself staying up into the wee hours of the night to finish the book (yet wishing that it would not end and the story would continue). I highly recommend this book if you like fantasy books.

This was a very enjoyable read. While it had familiar elements...and was in some ways reminicent of Clive Barkers 'Weave World' (mostly the hero...but also the tone...anyone else notice that?)...I had enough fun reading it to make Neil Gaiman an author I'll read more of.

Gaiman has an unusual ability to make you simply accept things that are not real, but are close enough that you slip into them easily. This is the second book I've read by him and found it to be a delight. I actually read it several months ago and have found that it's a book that stays with you well after you've finished it.
