Sometimes, when I don't like a book, I worry that I'm just being a lit snob or a bully. With Age of Miracles, however, I feel my displeasure is totally justified. The copious amounts of foreshadowing were a constant source of annoyance. Julia, our narrator, lacks any personality. And I don't understand what tone Karen Thompson Walker was aiming for. The narrative is too simplistic to qualify as adult literature, but it lacks the pacing & energy one usually finds in YA lit.

The author's blurb states that Karen Thompson Walker wrote this book in the morning hours before going to work. Maybe that's how I should have read it - early in the morning when my mind is still fuzzy and my critical faculties are still a bit numb. Maybe then this profoundly pointless book would have seemed charming or worth my time.
