I found this book reminiscent of Tom Robbins, or more like what would happen if Tom Robbins wrote Science Fiction. Even better, what would happen if you crossed Tom Robbins with Robert Heinlen, if that were possible.

My nit pick about Robbins is that sometimes his imagery is just too much, too flowery, too over the top. Stephenson does the same, but you get used to it. My nit pick with Stephenson is that he simply doesn;t know how to end a book. This one is worse case example, the thing just falls off a cliff. Suddenly in a couple of chapters, it fizzles out.

Up until that point, it's awesome.

There is one section that drags about 2/3 of the way through... but the rest of the novel is so great that it would be a crime not to give it 5 stars.

If you're wondering if you should read this novel, I can make it very simple for you. A Samurai hacker gets into a predicament delivering a pizza for the mob... and his name is Hiro Protagonist.

Definitely weird. it had it's moments. If you are a programmer and remember even the slightest bit of the 80s and 90s you will enjoy it.

In the future, super-inflation has made cash useless, so people literally wipe their asses with it. How can you not like a book with something like that in it? Snow Crash has absolutely everything that I look for in science fiction.

Although I enjoy science fiction, I had not gotten around to reading any Neal Stephenson until I tackled his latest megatome Anathem earlier this year. I was eager to read Snow Crash both because it was the book which catapulted Stephenson to cult hero status and because it received a lot of critical acclaim including being named to Time's all-time 100 best English-language novels.

Stephenson is a very smart guy with vast knowledge on a broad range of subjects with which he gratuitously peppers his novels. Snow crash is no different and references a variety of topics including ancient Sumerian history, linguistics, religion, virology, archaeology, and computer science as it weaves a story set in a future run by private corporations and franchises rather than the government. A collection of outrageous characters such as the sword wielding half-black, half-Korean hacker Hiro Protagonist, 15 year-old skater chick and courier Y.T, head of the American mafia and owner of a national pizza delivery company Uncle Enzo, and the villainous Aleut harpooner Raven, make this book a lot of fun. I loved it but would not recommend it for younger readers due to adult language and themes.

Awesome, it's like a science-fiction, cyberpunk version of Pulp Fiction.

This is one of the few books I've read more than once. I think I got more out of it the second time around.

Before Stephenson began writing his vast novels - which are among my favourites as well - he wrote this cyberpunk jewel. Apart from the typical cyberpunk traits, Stephenson adds his own hallmarks: crazy characters (an Aleut biker with a small nuke in his sidecar), a healthy dose of technology and an even faster storytelling pace compared to regular cyberpunk stories. A great read.

Very good book. This is one of those books that you need to read and discuss with others. I think I liked this book better than Anathem. It mixes ancient and modern religion with technology and throws in many twists and turns. Ahead of its time in many ways.
