Betsy Livingston: A woman who writes a blog on helpful hints and single mother. Abandoned by her husband when pregnant and never really got over it.
Zachary Livingston: Betsy's young son, he broke his arm on the grounds of the Johnson Tuberculosis Hospital where he was collecting plants for a scout merit badge.
Barry Livingston: Betsy's husband who deserted her when she was pregnant with Zachary. Left her in a financial disaster, she has never really recovered from the emotional abuse he heaped on her while they lived together.
Judd Kelsey: Betsy's father and a lieutenant on the Pecan Bayou Police Force.
Maggie Schaeffer: Betsy's aunt and a member of the Pecan Bayou Paranormal Society. She convinces Betsy to help with the filming of a Halloween ghost hunting special by local television station, NUTV.
Danny: Aunt Maggie's son with Down Syndrome. Danny is 27 and helps out with the investigation. He doesn't believe in ghosts.
Dr. William R. MacPhee: Dr. Mac, he has been Betsy's doctor since she was pregnant with Zachary.
Leo Fitzpatrick: A handsome stranger from Dallas who is visiting Pecan Bayou to look at the abandoned tuberculosis property. He is there with his son, Tyler.
Oliver Canfield: Barry Livingston's investment partner. He is also the con man who cheated Benny at Benny's BBQ and will soon take over half of his business.
Benny Mason: Owner of Benny's BBQ with two children and one on the way. He is also Zach's scout leader and a good friend to Betsy.
Maureen Boyle: A local woman who organizes against the paranormal investigation claiming it is bad for local families to dabble in the occult.
Johnson Tuberculosis Hospital is the center of this story. It is a derelict building that was built in 1911 to house and care for people diagnosed with "consumption" as tuberculosis was then known. Once diagnosed they were required to stay for 3-5 years before they could be released or they died. The building could house 100 patients.
Pecan Bayou: Small rural town outside of Houston where the hospital was built.
Dead Tunnel: This windowless tunnel or hallway was used to wheel the bodies to the morgue. This prevented the patients from seeing that someone had died.
Room 227: Overwhelming stench in the room and outside in the hallway. But Betsy sees a dresser she wants to find out who manufactured and when. She and Howard move the dresser and find a hole in the drywall and in the space behind the drywall they find a body. This is now a crime scene.
Pecan Bayou Paranormal Society: Members are Howard Gunther, Birdie Bryant and Maggie (Betsy's aunt). Ghost hunters whose current project is a filming at the Johnson Tuberculosis Hospital. They will film on Halloween the scariest night of the year.
NUTV: Local cable station who will be filming the ghost hunting at the hospital.
