After a recent break up, Kate is now living at home with her mother and grandmother. she begins research for an article that will explore whether women can still marry for money (finding an "eligible match") based on the concepts of Jane Austen's novels.
- Griffith Saunderson: A friend of Clive's. Runs a Bed and Breakfast. Kate makes fun of the way that he dresses.
- Marianne: Longtime friend of Kate's. Works at Haute magazine with Kate at the beginning of the novel. Pregnant with her first child.
- Brandon: Longtime friend of Kate. Living with his girlfriend, whom Kate does not like.
- Gavin: Fashion director at Haute magazine.
- Ellie: One of many pregnant ladies at Haute magazine.

- Emma: Kate's friend. Is British and lives in London with her husband. They recently purchased a beautiful new home.

- Iris: Kate's mother, although Kate always calls her Iris.
- Ann: Kate's sister. She is divorced and lives on her own in the city. She loves to make sauces, and hopes to make a career of it. She also makes great lasangas, which Kate claims are her own creation to her friends.
- Orietta del Bianco: A woman in Florida who takes Kate under her wing and introduces her at the Polo Club. A big part of Kate's initial search for an "eligible match" in florida.
- Anthony del Bianco: Orietta's husband. A man of few words.
