“Good thriller made into a good movie too. Sara the obedient wife of a financially successful and domineering husband who controls her and physically abuses her.
She plans her getaway by faking her drowning while out on a sailboat in a bad storm. She gets away and flushes her wedding ring down their toilet (bad move because it didn't flush and he sees the ring later and catches on to her escape.) She moves away and changes her looks and identity and visits her mother in a retirement home. She meets a nice guy that lives next door and they start a nice relationship. Her husband finds her and starts to terrorize her by setting all the items and bath towels in perfect order and then playing his favorite classical opera piece. She ends up shooting him to end it all. Very good. ”

“Yet again the book is entirely better than the movie. The movie was OK; I thought the book was great. Although the author did jump around a bit and sometimes she seemed a bit scatter brained, I enjoyed it. Who on here hasn’t been scattered brained with incoherent thoughts at any time in our lives? Sadly, the movie did not show how truly evil, manipulative and cruel Martin was. This man was a sociopath who probably only mourned because he didn’t have a punching bag anymore. Laura was smart, resourceful and a woman we probably all sorrowfully know. Sadly movies are always a stupid consolidated version of a book; you have to dumb down the plot for the mass audiences, most who refuse to read the original inspiration. The movie audience missed the real Martin/Sara/Laura/Ben and who their characters truly were. I plan on passing this book on to my mom to enjoy.”Cybi wrote this review Saturday, January 29, 2011. “Different to what I expected. Saw the film first, but very different. Burnie is more violent in the book, even with other people. The ending is different - the film's is better and more scarier. ”Penny Bollockia wrote this review Friday, December 10, 2010. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“Sara Burney is married to Martin Burney, the man she thought was her soul mate for life. Her honeymoon was dreamy and then then nightmares began. Physically abused and mentally harassed she stays with him for 3 years. And then one day she drowns in the ocean outside their beach house. Martin is devastated. His wife is dead - or is she really?
Somewhere in Cedar Falls, Iowa, a Laura Pray rents out an apartment and begins a new life - a life she yearned for, and free at last. Or she she?
Read this and find out.
The book is enjoyable, even paced and written in simple English.”
