“I admit when I first picked up Amethyst Eyes I was expecting your typical coming of age story, ie: boy losses parent, is taken in by his other parent, meets new people, and must make sense of it all. Got all that? Good. Sounds simple enough, right? Nuh uh. That’s what I thought and I was wrong.
Debbie Brown did a masterful job of taking young Tommy and all of those time honored traditions and made them fresh and exciting. When Tommy’s mother is killed in an auto accident, he’s taken in by his father and learns there’s far more to his life and the history of humanity than he would’ve ever imagined. Not only is Tommy put into a strange place to find himself, he must also do so aboard a space ship with a secret cult hunting him for his amethyst eyes.
I found the story compelling in that I’m a sucker for a good old fashioned tale, but when you throw in science fiction and it’s written well I’m hooked.”
