“Sad story dealing with a child's death. Family in tatters.”Tom R wrote this review Sunday, June 10, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“A beautiful book that will make you cry. A must read. Once I'd finished I just wanted to start it again.”Steph Gilchrist wrote this review Sunday, June 10, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“This book should come with a warning label. "Caution: Prior to reading this novel, stock up on tissues." I started crying midway through and never stopped. NEVER has a book hit me so hard emotionally. By the time I finished, I actually had a headache from crying. Completely ridiculous. But something about this family reminded me of my own. I too had parents that were too wrapped up in other things (in my case it was each other) to pay attention to their kids. My older sister was the one who stepped in and parented me, so Fern and Sarah's relationship struck a chord. I was the Charlie in my family, so I know how special that relationship is. Jo Knowles is such a talented author. All of her other titles have been firmly YA, but this one could easily be given to Tweens as well. The only "issue" to be aware of in giving the book to younger readers is Fern's brother Holden. The entire family has always known Holden is gay, but Holden is finally coming to terms with it. He has begun to explore the possibility of, well, exploring the possibility. He has a boyfriend. The most we ever see "on camera" so to speak, is hand-holding, but I suppose there was a hint that kissing had taken place. Still, this is pretty tame, all-in-all. This is a fantastic story about a family dealing with devastating grief and discovering that despite it all, love survives. ”Dolores S wrote this review Thursday, June 7, 2012. “This book was nothing like I expected.
It was ten times better.”
“Girl grows up in the shadows of her older brother and sister and the restaurant that is the family business. But on a good note, she is her little brother's hero. A very realistic story with a solid voice. And also very, very sad, so be warned. Jo rocks, as always.”BE Kelley wrote this review Sunday, June 3, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful?
