I'm not completely convinced that a government could ever function as she describes--but that's a minor quibble.” see full review » see other reviews » |

It was a quick read and as entertaining as I had hoped with regard to plot - the premise of the story is unique and has great potential - but I was let down (at times annoyed) by the author's immature writing skills.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I'm in love with Poison Study, and just dying for the next two to arrive in my hands (see... we're not just 'book sellers', we really are readers!)...A few underlying romantic themes, a little bit of mild nastiness (more implied or glossed over, rather than being the focus of many chapters), some wonderful escape scenes and great mental dialogue.
I can see why this gets bumped into the Youth Fantasy section - other than trying to ride on the coat tails of Twilight (of which this book is NOTHING like by the way... although might appeal to those you liked the general themes of the Twilight series but weren't hung up about the romantic relationships) - it's just 'light'. There isn't really a lot of darkness. Don't misunderstand me, it's not an 'after school special' - it is after all a book about a murderer who becomes the food taster and is hounded by lots of nasty people wanting to kill her in a variety of unsavoury ways, but it does have that overall happy ending feeling. Oh, but some 'nice' twists that came totally out of the blue.
Poison Study was a debut novel for Maria V. Snyder, and is even more exceptional because of that.
The next in the series "Magic Study" was in the finals for the RITA awards (hence getting popped over to romance) and "Fire Study" number three in the series spent two weeks on the New York Times bestsellers list - so I am expecting good things when I finally get a chance to read these.

“I am not sure what I was expecting from this book, but it exceeded by expectations. Although you could see all the 'plot twists' way before they happened, the book was very well written and kept you wanting more. I also like the world Snyder created; a sort of communist ides set to fantasy. It worked well. I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the series.”

That's sometimes my favorite way to read a book - not knowing any plot details ahead of time and just diving in. Poison Study was totally worth it; I loved Yelena's character with her toughness, fortitude, and willingness to sacrifice to get what she wanted. The book was a bit long, but even the parts between action sequences were interesting, as the reader is drawn into Yelena's predicament and the ghosts of her past. Happily, I found that this was a series not long after I started reading the book, so I'll be adding Magic Study to my TBR list.”

I didn't really believe in the love interest, and kept waiting for a better boyfriend to come along. I don't have a problem with the love interest, but the author didn't really make any sparks fly between the characters. But I was so drawn into this book and read through it so quickly that I have to give it 3 stars.”
