Julia's Chocolates

by Cathy Lamb

"I left my wedding dress hanging in a tree somewhere in North Dakota. I don't know why that particular tree appealed to me. Perhaps it was because it looked as if it had given up and died years ago and was still standing because it didn't know what else to do..."
In her deliciously funny, heartfelt, and moving debut, Cathy Lamb introduces some of the most wonderfully eccentric... (read more)

Hysterical and disturbing. All of the characters are or have been plagued with physical, sexual, and emotional abuse in childhood as well as adulthood. This is essentially a story about healing and escaping dark shadows from the past. It's without a doubt an adult book with some very mature content, but it can be surprisingly funny during the lighter parts. It had me alternating between cracking up and wincing in horror. Definitely full of well-drawn characters -- you've got to love Aunt Lydia. I also thoroughly enjoyed her flock of chickens. =)

I've met the author, Cathy Lamb, and heard her speak before. She's a really great and funny person, and I could definitely see her humor and personality come through in her writing.

Julia leaves her abusive fiance at the alter & flees to eccentric Aunt Lydia's home in Golden, Oregon. All of the characters are or have been plagued with physical, sexual, and emotional abuse in childhood as well as adulthood. This is essentially a story about healing and escaping dark shadows from the past. Poignant novel about courage, love, friendship, and great chocolate. Will never forget the 'Get to know your vagina Psychic Night'!

I really wanted to like this book. Julia's healing was too simplistic, though. I think the subject was too heavy for chick-lit. The obvious, constant foreshadowing was annyoying as well. Not impressed. : (

This was a fast and enjoyable read with quirky characters. My only regret is that I felt the character of Robert was underdeveloped. Julia didn't make clear about him what made her stay, which is an issue for so many abused women.

I really like this author! She develops her characters so well...and makes you want to move to Oregon to meet them all. I definitely recommend it to anyone--especially for a good summer read.

Very fast read. Almost too simple for such complex issues, but this one prompted some great discussion in our book group. Recommended chick book.

Amusing and a bit silly. Entertaining but a bit overblown. I liked some of the quirkiness of the characters but, by the end of the book, they became fairly formulaic.

What a heartbreakingly beautiful book! All the ladies in this book have gone through some very tough times and they help each other and are there for support as each one faces their own emotional and physical demons. I Loved this book and it made me cry and laugh and I could not stop thinking of the characters long after I finished this book.
