This book has some very interesting ideas on Christianity and the history of antisemitism. I read most of it and have unfortunately lost my copy, but I plan to purchase again. Carroll's prespective as an ex-Catholic priest gives is a very intriguing one.

An insightful presentation of the Church's (mostly Roman Catholic) relationship with Judaism and the Jewish people. I would recommend the early chapter for to anyone interested in the development of very primitive Christianity and the development of the the gospel narratives. The last section of the book presents some possibilities for a reforming the Roman Church by setting an agenda for an imagined Vatican III. One of my concerns/critiques is that the author sees the Roman Church's attitude to Jews and Judaism as 'the' defining aspect of her life. I am not sure it can be reduced to that one aspect. Also, he seems to be calling for a re-writing if the New Testament materials themselves in order to expunge passages which have led to anti-semitism, instead of merely creating pacific and life-engendering interpretations. All that being said, it is a beautifully written book with many personal details and thought-provoking observations.

History doens't seem so long ago. This book delivers insight into the history between Jews and Christians that I had yet to uncover.

Facinating and likely a new, eye opening line drawn through history.

A meaty book but that would be a chore had it not been addressing something most fail to study or approach from the this perspective.

A marvelous history of Christian anti-Semitism. The first third of the book, covering malleability of historical knowledge, and the life and times of Jesus and the early Christian church, are totally fascinating.

I saw this author on Bookspan, and his talk was terrific. A bought the book. It was a lot to get thru as it is quite historical in nature and long; It is very well researched and well worth the read. I especially enjoyed the beginning and the end parts of the book. I met James Carroll when he came to speak at our Temple and he autographed my copy.

This book affected me more profoundly than any other I have read. I had no idea how intimately the Christian Church was involved in the creation and evolution of anti-semitism. This book begins with the era immediately after Jesus' death and takes you through the post-Vatican II world. Make no mistake - it is no light read. You will want two bookmarks - one for the page you are on and a second for the endnotes section. This book is incredibly academic, while being accessibly readable. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history and/or truth of Christianity.

If you have ever wondered how there came to be such a wide gap between Christianity and Judaism, this book will explain it in detail. The book is very detailed with historical figures, events, dates and places, that it may become boring to all but the hard-core history buff. However, if you can make it through all the historical references, you will be rewarded by a much clearer understanding of the Christian church and the decisions to divorce it completely of any reference to Judaism.
