Probably the best book of memoirs on World War II, at least in the Pacific theater. You feel like you're right there with Eugene Sledge and you can even smell the war. I lived in Okinawa right after the battle when unexploded ordnance was all over the island and dependents lived in quonset huts. Japanese soldiers who didn't surrender were still supposedly in the northern part of Okinawa. Because I learned to read in Okinawa this book has always had a special place in my heart.
