- Eva Nine: An innocent human girl raised in a world of machines, robots, and simulations, who knows nothing about the real world around her and how her race fits into place.
- Rovender Kitt: Eva's best friend and travel companion.
- Muthr: The chimera robot that raised Eva Nine and attempted to train her for outside life. Eva's Muthr gave her life to save Eva's.
- Otto: A water-bear that Eva befriends and communicates with telepathically.
- Hailey Turner: The boy-pilot who discovered Eva. He is about fifteen and has a hidden agenda and won't let Eva in.
- Van Turner: Hailey's grandfather. He is a "Toiler" as the city people call him and he is banished from New Attica.
- Eva Eight: Eva Nine's biological sister. Eva Eight was raised in the same Sanctuary and by the same Muthr. She is full of sadness and bitterness.
- Brother Nadeau: From Rovender's clan. When Eva rescues him, it is obvious that he won't be able to live much longer.
- Huxley: A tall, sloth, snake-like alien who Eva Nine rescues. Huxley has a courageous, humble personality.
- Cadmus Pryde: The leader of the human city, New Attica. Soon, despite his apparent kindness and generosity, it becomes apparent that he has a hidden agenda.
- Gen Pryde: Daughter of Cadmus Pryde. She is innocent of the world outside the walls of New Attica and prefers to stay that way.
- Arius: One of four siblings who came to Orbana together. Each sibling has something they seek. She seeks and tells the future.
- Zin: Arius's brother. He seeks knowledge.
- Darius: Arius's and Zin's sister, who saw the past. She went missing and hasn't been been found.
- Besteel: A marauding huntsman who worked for the queen.
- Queen Ojo: Queen of Orbana.
- Loroc: Brother of Arius, Darius, and Zin. Seeks strength.
- Soth: The shaman from Rovender's home village.
- Antiquus: Leader of Rovender's village.
- Hostia: Rovender's friend from Lacus.
- Galell: Hostile alien from Rovender's village.
