Caught in a snow storm Sabrina is taken care of by Phillip which of course by society's standards means she is ruined.

This was actually pretty good. I enjoyed it. A good regency romance.

I have let it settle for a while in order to be able to get to the bottom of an issue: what was it that bothered me so much while reading it?
    The story is decent enough.

    ATTENTION!!!! PLOT SPOLIERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After an attempted rape, Sabrina flees her home only to get lost in a snowstorm. She is saved and nursed to health by Phillip Mercerault and since the times are what they were and his reputation being that of a rake, he proposes marriage after being 5 days alone with her. She refuses then has to accept under the circumstances. They get married and struggle ahead until the end.

So, what was it after all? The material in hand promised a very enjoyable read! The rakish viscount saves her, she is far from a doormat, witty and fiesty, the arranged marriage, the villain AND the villainness are there. Except that Coulter tried to innovate too much and failed at it. I didn't quite understand why Sabrina refused marriage. She is too young (only 18) but she is by far too innocent even for those times.
The villain Trevor and her sister Elizabeth provide for quite an entertainment but they are dealt with in such a horrible manner that is unbelievable.
And now we get to the heart of the issue: the characters.
Phillip starts off as likable enough even if a bit unbelievable: he nurses her for 5 whole days like a saint and does not show a trace of his ulterior dominating temper. It is enough to get back to society that he does a 180 as a character. He is not only domineering (which is not a crime in itself) but he is abusing, both physically and psychologically. He is supposedly fighting off the love for her by going to his mistress on his wedding night????? Pleeeease! And do we have to be put through such detailed description of their night together? Or the way in which Trevor the villain abuses the maids and they like it????
Another thing that could have been handled best is the way Sabrina and Phillip get used to each other after the marriage (that takes ages to happen and I'm not talking about suspense). She finally makes him make love to her, he not only mistakes her for his mistress (oh, yes!) but after he fails to 'give her pleasure', what does she do? She goes around telling practically everyone (not just close friends, just everyone within earshot) that little bit of fact supposedly too innocent to realize there was more to lovemaking than that (of course, common sense does not even enter in the equation, that is private things are to remain private). And to top it off, their friends who help them get back together (although I can't understand why, for the life of me) promises Phillip a reward if he succeeds to do that.
Should I also mention the scene where he hits her? And the way he demands (even to the very end) total submission from her? I fear this is quite enough.
As a first form this author, I fear it was also the last! Pity she wanted to do too much with so little!
