It's a good book if you like stories about little black girls getting raped.

REQUIRED READING - TENTH GRADE: This is an autobiography about a young black girl from when she's the age of three to college age. The main characters are Momma, Bailey Jr., Maya, and Mother Dear. Maya grows up in a conservative southern town. The theme is that you will come across many hardships but you have to triumph over them. I liked this book because it brought out a lot of feeling and it was real. This novel relates to Old Man and the Sea because both Maya and the Old Man stuck with what they wanted so they could get it.

Overall, this was very good, however there were a few parts that didn't really excite me. One chapter was all about charity, and I ended up skipping most of this chapter. Still, this book told an interesting story about a young girl's life, and I really liked it. all the same, in my opinion, it was not 100% perfect.

I would really enjoy having this book in my class because it would allow the students to more understand what an autobiography is. I would use this as a read aloud and we would use the predicting strategy to try and figure out what is going to come next. Then after that, we would talk about what she has talked about in the book and if our predictions were correct or not.

A must-read - if you've never read Maya Angelou - read this. If you love her - reread this.
