very funny, it's nice to see austen poking fun of others (and herself) for the general stuffiness that modern readers find in period books.
    lovely read.

I'm reading this book because it's the only Jane Austen book I haven't read yet. And Masterpiece Theater on PBS is showing movies of all Jane Austen's book, so I wanted to get this one in before it shows this Sunday. Anyone else watching the Jane Austen series?
So far I'm really liking the book.

Well I am re reading this book after realising belatedly that it is a parody on the gothic novel. That she is poking fun at it although her rant in the middle about people who don't read novels seemed a little strange to me.

Northanger Abbey is by no means Austen's best novel, but it is still a worthwhile read. Stay away from the horrible/lousy movie that was made in the 80s. This is a book that should be made into a movie, but something closer to the book, not some horror film. The book itself is interesting in that you can see Austen's writing mature between this book and her later novels.
