Northanger Abbey

by Jane Austen

Of all her novels, this one is the most explicitly literary in that it is primarily concerned with books and with readers. In it, Austen skewers the novelistic... (read more)

This is the story of a young woman who has not seen much of life yet. Her experience is only through the adventurous romance novels she has read. When she has an opportunity to experience life first hand, she makes some whopping mistakes, but her innate honesty and kindness carry her through.
A wonderfully humerous story which almost spoofs the novels of Jane Austen's day. This is my favorite Austen novel.

Not Austen's usual. I could hardly finish it. Slow and lackluster at best.

I'm reading this book because it's the only Jane Austen book I haven't read yet. And Masterpiece Theater on PBS is showing movies of all Jane Austen's book, so I wanted to get this one in before it shows this Sunday. Anyone else watching the Jane Austen series?
So far I'm really liking the book.

Well I am re reading this book after realising belatedly that it is a parody on the gothic novel. That she is poking fun at it although her rant in the middle about people who don't read novels seemed a little strange to me.
