The setting of this book is south Chicago neighborhood. Caroline, a childhood friend, has a dying mother and a problem -- after twenty-five years she wants V.I. to find the father she never knew. But when V.I. starts probing into the past, she not only finds out where all the bodies are buried -- she stumbles onto a very new corpse. Now she’s stirring up a deadly mix of big business and chemical corruption that may become a toxic shock to a snooper who knows too much.

Typical Warshawski! She starts out on an "easy" case, find her friend's father (name unknown) and winds up with a whole tangle of disconnected threads involving a murder, a chemical factory and more. Eventually, she is able to connect the threads, but the search for the missing links is fascinating.

V.I. attends the reunion of her high school basketball team and her old friend asks her to find her father. She finds more than she bargained for.

I love Sarah Paretsky! I've been reading her for years and once again I'm recommending a series. The protagonist in this series is a strong, independent woman, with no family but some very good friends. She is smart and stubborn and frequently mixed up in very interesting situations. These stories are dark, involved and well written. Blood Shot isn't the first but one of the early ones and there are a lot to follow. They take place in and around the Chicago metropolitan area and it plays a big part the stories, too.
