A mentally challenged man named Wesley discovers a beckoning world inside his mind. The world offers him pieces of knowledge, gifts he can't resist, and he carries them back to the physical world, unaware dark instincts tag along. The knowledge builds Wesley's intellect and gives him the ability to heal two sick friends, but the instincts thrust him into an evil contest he can't understand, against opponents who have trained their entire lives to kill. Wesley must fight for his life in two worlds while piecing together his mind and coming to terms with his heritage. The more he understands, the harder it becomes to distinguish good from evil. The greater his intellect, the more difficult his choices. Wesley's first decision with a fully-functioning mind is what he must sacrifice to save mankind: his life or his soul.

Themes & Symbolism edit see section history

  • Lydia (Wesley's mother): Despite the really bad first impression Lydia makes in the novel, she's actually the personification of the "good and evil together" theme that runs throughout the novel. The green face with the gold eyes that appears in Wesley's mind-world also symbolizes that theme.
  • Green: Wesley is a little confused about what the color green represents in his mind-world, thanks to his mother. At first, he thinks green is bad, but green represents life, both good and bad.
  • Gold: Gold represents evil.
  • Great prizes require great effort: This theme is secondary to the main theme that good and bad travel together and often can't be separated. Bobby and Vicky's relationship carries the theme that great prizes require great effort through most of the novel, and then it's applied to Wesley.
