Joseph Finder- Company Man (St. Martin’s Press 2005) 4 Stars

This is my first Joseph Finder book, but it certainly won’t be my last. Company Man tells the story of Nick Conover who is the CEO of a big-league company. His family is trying to recover from the death of his wife. He must come to grips with his fatherhood, despite the fact that he and his son share the blame for his wife’s death, at least in their minds they do. On top of that it seems that he is being deceived and undermined at work and someone is threatening his family after he had to layoff thousands of workers. No one thought that he would fight so hard to keep control of his life.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Company Man. Joseph Finder is a very talented author who knows how to grip your attention. I did find a couple of sections fairly dry reading, but they both lead up to jaw-dropping situations. Finder throws surprise after surprise at the reader, keeping you guessing all the way through. The characters were very believable and each of them had problems of their own to deal with, making them relatable for the reader. The dialogue seemed like it was also very well thought out and realistic. A downer in this book was that although in most parts it is very good reading, it had its parts that I thought either could have been removed altogether or rewritten to make them more interesting, they don’t really add anything to the book.
Overall Company Man is a great book. I recommend it to thriller lovers.

Finder writes very original books that aren't like most of the bestselling authors. This book is one of the most exciting books I've ever read with a great twist at the end. If you want to be entertained, you should really read this book!

Gripping. My attention was captured right within the first 30 pages. An excellent blend of juggling parenthood and corporate craziness. Excellent characters.

When the lives of your children are on the line, how do you know who to trust?? How honest can you be when honesty may destroy the very thing you think you need?? How loyal to your company should you be when a conspiracy against you seems unstoppable??
Nick Conover is the CEO of a corporation. Recently widowed, Nick attempts to cope with his inability to reach out to his kids. When the Conover home is broken into and the walls are covered with threatening graffiti, Nick is concerned about the security of his home. As the stalker grows bolder and the actions more menacing, Nick fears for their very lives.
A confrontation with the possible stalker occurs and Nick makes a deadly decision. Nick calls an old friend for help, Eddie Rinaldi. He is a former cop and current Chief of Security for Nick's company. A cover-up begins and in the process, Nick discovers a major conspiracy going on in the office involving many of the people that he has trusted over the years.
Audrey Rhimes is the investigating police officer drawn in to the situation. She is implacable in pursuing her investigation and she senses that Nick and Eddie are involved. As she deals with her husband, who is drinking heavily and suffering depression due to being laid off by Nick, Audrey wonders if her integrity is being colored by her dislike of Nick.
As the investigation, the cover-up and the financial conspiracy all converge into a maelstrom, Nick meets a woman who seems to be the key to smoothing the rough waters and holding it all together, all it takes is a bit of trust and honesty.
Honesty can destroy it all and the question remains, who can be trusted when the stakes are all or nothing.......

This is a pretty good thriller. Nick Conover is the CEO of an office furniture company that is the main business of a small town. Economic problems cause Nick to cut half the workforce which effects just about everyone in the town who now hate him and call him Slasher Nick.

Someone starts breaking into his house and writing hateful messages on his walls. The police do virtually nothing to help him because he is so disliked. After his dog is gutted, Nick calls his security head, Eddie Rinaldi who installs a sophisticated security system in Nick's house. Eddie also gives Nick a gun just in case. Of course we know that Nick will use it. It will also lead to a possible murder rap for Nick that he in Eddie will try to cover up.

Meanwhile, strange forces are underway at Nick's job and his Chief Financial Officer seems to be plotting with one of the board members to take Nick's company away.

The book is full of interesting personalities including the lady detective who tries to bring down Nick and Eddie while dealing with her own domestic problems. Then there is Nick's troubled son and the mysterious woman who is the daughter of the man that Nick accidentally kills.

I would have rated this book higher except that you can figure out pretty quickly that Nick's girlfriend is definitely hiding a lot of dirty laundry. I finished the book in under a week which is good considering it is about 500 pages long.
