Samantha Elliot has lost the last known living relative when her father succombs to cancer. She finds herself going to New York and living with a friend of her fathers whom he had rented from in preparation for his upcoming retirement.
Samantha nearly makes love to Mike at their first meeting, as she is virtually tackled when he tries to rescue a ball flying her way and as he keeps her from the dangerous spikes on the fence they first meeting is their first embrace and soon they are entangled in a lucious lip lock that has both of them reeling. Mike is then completely perplexed when she withdrawls and turns a cold shoulder, and deals with him so business like it leaves him wondering about her. When things dont get any warmer as time goes on he wonders what happened to her to make her so unwelcomed to physical affection.
Michael Taggert is an author, landlord, "adonisly" handsome, a bit arrogant and a real nuisance, especially since Dave had asked him basically to be her guardian as old fashioned as it seemed and Mike was taking his role very seriously. And yet Sam wondered who would protect her from him. Mike is working on a book about the old gangsters, and specifically the one who seems to be her biological grandfather.
They meet for tea with the old gangster called "Doc" or Tony Barrett, and he tells them that he never saw "Maxie" after the night of the masacre in 1928. But there is strangely an attack on Sams life that night and the attacker wanted to know where "half hands" money was.
Mike and Sam argue constantly about her outlook on life and the fact that she does not allow certain physical affection into her life and not only that that the passion she verballizes and shows at other times seems to be locked away most of the time.
As Mike learns about her history he slowly understands more and more. But he is still perplexed and finally when they learn that "Doc" isnt her real father and that the money that half hand stole is still seemingly at large, Mike conspires with his family to recreate
that horrible night of the "Jubilee Masacre" that has left everyone in wonder.
He believes this will unlock the emotions so carefully stored and preened inside Samantha.
Only then can their life together begin.
