“I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Hartman has created a detailed and psychologically believable semi-feudal world in which dragons and humans have lived in peace for sixty years because of a treaty they have signed. Dragons are are highly logical and intelligent species who are able to take the form of humans. Seraphina, the heroine, in her teens discovers, to her horror, that she is half human, half dragon. Marriage between the species is illegal. Her father had no knowledge that his wife was a dragon until she died in childbirth. I thoroughly enjoyed all the intricate details about the pains Seraphina has to go through to hide her status...hide the silver scales on her wrist and waist that developed in her teens. ”Elizabeth G wrote this review Thursday, December 27, 2012. “Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty's anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.
Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen's Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.”

“Seraphina is a gifted half dragon half human musician. She is thrown into life at court in the middle of an uneasy peace between dragons and humans. “No one knows that Seraphina is actually part dragon. She's been able to hide this secret during her childhood but now she is starting to grow scales. The problem is that there has always been a very uneasy truce between the human world and the dragon world.
This is a nice challenge read. ”
“Gr. 7 up. Seraphina is half human, half dragon. She has joined the kingdom when there is a precarious truce between humans and dragons. When a human prince is murdered Seraphina finds herself trapped between 2 worlds.
I never finished it I didn't enjoy it enough to continue and someone told me that nothing really happens in this book and that it is just a set up for the next book in the series.”
