This novel was startling in it's innovative use of the domestic novel genre turned to political purpose. A must-read for anyone interested in antebellum American history.

The plot of the book was very well thought out in order to portray the brutalities of the southern slave owners. The whole general idea of the plot was actually kind of funny when you think about it

A classic work of fiction that penetrates deeply into the hearts and minds of both slave and slave owner in the mid 1800's in the U.S. Bathed in scripture with Christ-like heros and the most evil villans, this work inspires, shocks and floods the soul with the sweetness of God's goodness in the midst of life's hashest cruelties.

I found the ending to be a little too convenient to tie up loose ends.

This was an excellent book that I really enjoyed reading. I loved the wide cast of characters and the different flavors that they brought to the plotline. The characters were certainly the strong point of the book for me, and Tom was a hero to remember. Since I was raised on the King and I's version of this story (Run Eliza! Run from Simon!), it was a pleasure to see the story fleshed out as it was originally imagined by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The best chapter was the epilogue in which Stowe explained how close to reality the book was because it really helped bring home the reality of slavery and how slaves were treated for me.

I read this as a "gifted" program, a type of "bridge" program, and I liked it, but I think you have to read things when you are ready to accept them, and that is one of the themes I plan to emphasize in my future talks. What would I think if I read it now? I was 14 then! The software doesn't even feature my edition! At any rate, it was certainly and remains a great book.
