Gone with the Wind is my all time favorite book, and I felt somewhat morally obligated to read Uncle Tom's Cabin as a counterpoint. I think it's a bit heavy handed with the moralizing "Mother... what would you do if you were in her position???" and it is quite emotionally manipulative. However, I think the character sketches do bring to life the evils of slavery and how it affected the slave, master, and all Americans of the time. A very interesting window into a very dark time in American history. Far more interesting than anything I read in my history books.

i am noticing a pattern here, on many of the classics, especially the ones where school aged young people are assigned to read them, there are tons of this is a good book, i like this book, or i didnt get this book. or whatever. it would be great to see a few comments lookng at what about the book impacted you. just my personal opinion, of course, but generally cheerleading doesnt do much for the cause,,,
