This book contains a number of themes which together paints a wide picture of a mariner's life in a small coal producing town in County Durham. The themes that are explored are: -

-the census arrangements for vessels in port during the 1800's
-the building and development of the harbour
-the type, size and description of sailing and steam ships visiting the harbour
-the names, ages, occupations and home port of all sailors on board ship in harbour on each census day from 1841 to 1911
-Previously unknown facts and statistics about the ships and sailors using the harbour

A short novelette follows which vividly brings to the reader a taste of a mariner's life when their ship arrives at harbour. The social history of harbour life in Victorian England is brought to life.

Quotes edit see section history
