After a short stint doing mindless jobs for a large detective agency, Terry Lancaster decides he'd rather work for himself. Soon he has his own office, a stack of bills, and not enough clients to whittle them down. Then out of the blue he's hired by a once-influential Boston family to corral a run-away son being groomed for great things in politics. Lancaster sets out to bring the young man back before he ruins his career, but what seems a simple errand for a good paycheck and the promise of more business soon finds Lancaster deep in the midst of murder and betrayal, with more clients than he can handle. Bad things happen in even the best of families, and what Lancaster discovers will test not only the limits of what he's willing to do for a client, but also his own sense of justice.
