Abused both physically and mentally by his father while growing up on a farm in nineteenth century France, Gastien learns to survive by promising himself a better life. He will go to Paris and become a great artist and lovemaker.
He leaves home at 18, a peasant with no money and no formal art training. Facing impossible odds, he vows that he will not only learne how to paint, but will own a studio in Montmartre one day. Montmartre is where all the artists are gathering and new ideas like Impressionism and other styles are blossoming.

Longing for affection and remembering how his father misused his mother, he also vows to become a great lover. He will make women happy, instead of just thinking about himself. That way many women will want him.

Gastien endures unending struggle once he arrives in the city. The things he must go through, and the choices he must make, threaten to destroy his sanity. Yet, the dream will not die. Along the way, Gastien learns the difference between sex and love...and the similarity of sex and power.

Sometimes the "impossible" is possible. But the cost can be extremely high.
