This was a Book Club Read. As soon as I started reading this book I realized I had read it previously. It was a bit like visiting an old friend. Emily and Georges meet in Australia and after a brief romance they married and returned to Paris where Georges is working on tender plans for the bridge over the Sydney Harbour. She goes to Chartres with Georges to meet his mother. An incident there will change her life dramatically. She has some extremely tough decisions to make. I got the feeling early on that Emily only married Georges to escape her father who constantly nagged her to do something great with her life. I felt a little sorry for Georges as he was working living and breathing the Bridge - it was his dream to follow in his father’s footsteps (or I should say his mother’s dream). I think in the end it cost him dearly and it was all for naught. Emily was a rather selfish person and I found myself not liking her at all. Her lies and deceit with Georges and making Sarah lie for her. She was determined to go her own way and trample over anyone in the process. I felt she lived in a fairy tale world at the end when she started her journal to her daughter. She gives the impression that as soon as Marie read her reason’s for abandoning her as an infant that suddenly all would be forgiven and that they would be able to have a normal mother daughter relationship. Also I felt that Olive was also a very selfish person encouraging Emily to pursue her dreams no matter what the cost and the cost was high indeed. Miller writes a story that causes one to rethink one’s priority in life. Would I have the courage to abandon my child like Emily. The cost would be too high for me.
