This is a talented writer - I hope to read more of his work. This author can paint magnificent pictures with his words and has a real talent for descriptive scenes and what is going on in the character's minds. However, the descriptions tend to be repetitive and sometimes get in the way of the story itself. I found myself skipping over repetitive descriptive passages to get to the story.
I liked a lot about this novel - the alternation of scenes from the killer's childhood with his present day activities worked for awhile. And I enjoyed the internal dialog of various characters. I believe it would have been a better work with tighter editing as some of the scenes added little to the story except to drag it out.

The Good: Great premise and interesting. There were some great quotes. (something I really like from a book.)
The Bad: the book was very disjointed and ended really abruptly. Also at times the same concept was repeat over and over again.
I think if the book had a good editor who rearranged the chapters and cut the redundant phrase this book would have been a four star book.
I would like to try other books from this author as his ideas are interesting.

What do you do when a serial killer raises you from birth to be just like him? Henry has lived all his life in his father's shadow of terror and serial murder with the tacit understanding that he was being groomed to continue the "family business". Having witnessed his first murder as a toddler and actively participating in his father's murder sprees as an adult, Henry tries in vain to battle his inner demons and break free to go out on his own.

As an adult, Henry is struggling with the knowledge that his father's actions as well as his own have driven him literally insane - hearing voices and seeing images of horrific crimes in mirrors. Even when Henry eventually kills his father, he can not escape the anger and vengeance that he creates in one of his earlier victims; as the spirit of the dead man reaches out from beyond the grave to exact his own brand of revenge.

I have to say that this book was strange, extremely strange, and of course, being concerned with the life and actions of a serial killer, very, very violent. That being said, I did enjoy it even if truth be told, I probably wouldn't have chosen to read this book for myself. It certainly was different and not like any book I'd ever read before. It held me spellbound and at attention all through the story and I give it a solid B+!

The author seems really nice. :) Also, the book sounds very exciting and I can't wait to read it and all of the other ones that A.J. Gallant wrote.

Hey, if someone reccomends a book to me I'm going to read it. And if the author personally tells me that they want me to read it... why should I say no? Plus... I love reading :)

A highly engrossing tale, “Madman in the Mirror” is a story about a man – Henry Johnson – who is raised by a psychopath and forced to watch – even as a baby – his father murder people on a regular basis. He is also abused and brainwashed, turning him into a sociopath. Henry stalks and murders people efficiently – he tells himself that he may be a killer, but he doesn’t want people to suffer. He is haunted by hallucinations, including a specter in his mirror that talks to him.

It is hard to explain the plot without spoiling things – but I will say that this is a very interesting story, that in the end addresses nature vs. nurture, among other things, such as life after death and heaven and hell, just to mention a few. While I found the story fascinating, I did have to count off a star for poor editing – not only are grammar mistakes rife (i.e., “his feet was”) but there are scads of missing words, extra words and misused words (for example “popular” for “poplar” and “furry” for “fury,” which are just two of myriad examples). This made it very difficult to figure out what the author was trying to say at times – he mentions “crout” and it took me a quite awhile to figure out he meant “Kraut.” I often had to put as much effort into parsing the sentences as I did into understanding what was happening. That should not deter you from checking this book out, however, as it is very entertaining.
