The Renegade Rodeo Company explodes onto the scene with all the glitz, thrills, and spills that could be expected in the rough rowdy gutsy world of rodeo. At first, the high voltage promising new company seems to offer the opportunity for all of their dreams to come true. However, they would all be blindsided by the horrific consequences that come blowing in on those winds of change.
Mirror Images: Why would someone want to create a person in their image in every way, shape or form? Mapping out the person’s life, career, movements and making sure that he/she/they turned out exactly to their specifications or you might say blueprint. Garrison Holiday had plans for his two twin sons. Everything in their lives would be programmed according to his wants and wishes. Why? Because that was ho he wanted it! But, two sons competing for their father’s love, acceptance and approval and never really attaining it. Why would 17 minutes make a difference in the life one young man? How would being born 17 minutes after your twin brother cloud the way a parent feels about you? Twin brothers Mack and Blue Holiday are identical in so many ways. Both handsome, intelligent and have much to offer. Mack the heart and soul of his father Garrison who had big plans for him to run for political office. Blue, younger by 17 minutes an aspiring businessman and rancher. One the father wanted to mold and create his future, the other thinking he might go into law yet never allowing himself to let him he was proud. Standing in the shadow of his brother made it hard for him to compete at times. Then, the army denies Blue and Mack goes to Vietnam. The end result would change a family forever. As Mack decides to marry his sweetheart before leaving and returns in a black bag.
But, let’s fast-forward just bit and learn more about the people living in Cedar Ridge. Changes in your lives are often made to spice things up, create a better life or in some cases allow you breathing room to live. Jessica Warnick is not happy being married to Jake and wants out. Each year becomes harder to remain with him and she is afraid of being alone but living with him is hindering and she cannot deal with it any longer. Jake is a career street cop and has finally come to realize that it might be time to look for another career. Change: Can he honor his promises to change or will Jessica find happiness somewhere else after more than 20 years of marriage? So, what would make this couple stay together? What would turn their lives around including Blue Holiday and Buck his son? How about the rodeo? Blue always wanted to be a ride and in the rodeo. But, at this point in his life that was not to be. Riding on the back of the bull was his dream but at this point in his life that was not going to happen. Renegade Rodeo Company comes on like gangbusters as we meet Chance, Corey and many more whose spirits run high and whose fear of danger does not really exist, when riding the bull. Chance is a young black man who is quite adept at riding any bull that he draws. So, when Garrison Holiday makes sure that his next ride is Black Bomber he never expects him to remain sitting. Disappointed that he did not get pulverized, he states there will be other times. Why he hates this young man still has not been revealed.
Fast-forward again to the present as this rodeo means the world to the Holiday family but Blue has lived out two lives until now. One in the political arena in memory of his brother Mack and one for himself. Now, it is his turn to take the reins and make a name for himself. Up there in age and not able to ride on the back of the bull Blue has decided to live his own life instead if in his brother’s and father’s shadows. Success comes to those who fail first at times. If you don’t try how will you know if you will succeed.
Avery Scarsdale was Mack’s wife until he was killed in Viet Nam. Always attracted to her and worried about how she was going to rear Mack’s unborn child, Blue courted her and they created a life together. Now, up in years he has decided to leave government and branch out on his own along with Jake, Jessica, and Buck hoping to start a new with his rodeo.
Jake, although a partner in the rodeo lived in Blue’s shadow. Jessica, his wife hoping and wanting to change him and mold his personality to suit her needs and wants. Each character trying to recreate the person in order to adhere to their hopes and wants. Life does not work like that and people are not sculptures or paintings on a canvas that you can paint or mold. When the four decide to create this partnership the Renegade Rodeo Company takes the world by storm. With its great gimmicks, thrills and much more it seemed like success was on the horizon. But, things change and the world is not always perfect and Blue, Jake, Buck and Jessica learn many hard lessons before all is said and done.
As the major force in the company Blue felt he was the top banana or top man on the rung. Finding fault with everyone and everything they did even though he had promised to try harder after Buck’s bout with drugs and hospitalization. Buck’s problem was definitely weighing hard on him and the end result just might not be what he would have orchestrated even with his position of power. Jessica hoping to increase business and remedy the problems they are having tried explaining why jobs needed to be defined, hierarchy of status and the fact that each partner of person needs to handle more than one thing at a time. As she explained it to him his face lit up with pride but his response was not what she expected.
The time for the next rodeo approached and Blue refused to allow Jessica to become secretary and had a fit when he heard she would drive a rig, something happens to alert the Jo Beth, the woman hired for the job that she needed to warn Chance that the bull he drew was dangerous and to be careful. Why did Blue hate Chance and why give him the most dangerous bulls to ride?
The end result for Chance was disaster and much more. Just what happens to him you will have to read for yourself. Knowing that the draw for Widow Maker was changed and rigged so that Chance got it make Jo Beth guilty for not reporting it to the officials. When Jake does not return to the motel after the feeding for the animals Jessica is worried. Had anyone told her or anyone that Widow Maker was a killer Jake’s fate would have been different? The end result was fatal.
Confronting Blue about being a partner in the rodeo business ignites more than just tempers as someone overhears her threaten him and the next thing she is hauled off in handcuffs for his murder. But, did she do it or is there another explanation.
Noah Stoddard is someone from her past and she enlisted his help with Jake died to help her with the partnership. Now, would this lawyer be able to get her off on a murder charge and what skills would he use to make sure that she was found innocent? Added to that the Sheriff was determined she’s pay for killing his best friend, Blue and revenge seemed to be the only way to go. But, secrets, lies, betrayals and much more are exposed for the end result is revealed. Jessica is a pawn in this plot and the players are dangerous and goal to take down Blue, Buck and frame Jessica too. The hold on Buck you will have to learn for yourself. The end result and how it all plays out will definitely surprise the reader. Twists, turns, family values questioned, family love tested and one woman in the middle of all of this struggle trying to prove that being who you are is all that matters and living up to what others want and expect not the case. With a family that loves her and rallies around will Jessica be found guilty? Will the truth come out? Will the men who are threatening Buck and much more pay? The end result is not one that you will expect. Watch Noah as he takes the courtroom by storm trying to free Jessica.
Everyone needs to be his or her own person. Everyone needs to be accepted for who and what they are. Parents need to praise their children and not expect them to be their carbon copy. What will the fate of Buck be? What really happened to Blue and who is responsible? Author Jetta Stone brings to light these issues and much more in a story filled with excitement, energy each time the rodeo is in town and the events are described and reminding the reader that everyone has a talent and needs to explore it on their own. Family relationships, a father’s expectations and the sadness behind trying to live up to his brother’s legacy and much more are at the center of this outstanding novel. What is the final fate of the Renegade Rodeo? Feel the excitement as the color guard leads the parade and the events are about to start and the riders are in place!
Silver Moon is a well-written novel with characters that are clearly defined, flawed and true to life. This book is a definite must read for rodeo lovers, barrel races like my niece and for anyone that loves excitement watching a good rodeo.
