“So you open the book, and what’s on page 1? An execution! What a way to grab attention. The book is well paced, so your attention is always kept front and center. The fantasy world is neat with a mystery surrounding the peoples and their histories that is kept alive until the final pages.
In addition to the mystery, we’re also provided with an age old favorite – the love triangle. Lianne is torn between the boy she’s always been best friends with, Bryden, and the boy she’s always had a crush on that’s finally taken notice of her, Kellan. This has no bearing on the story, but I was personally team Bryden from the get-go, just sayin’. She struggles with this throughout the major conflict, and it gets her into further trouble.
Now, lately I’ve been getting pretty tired of love triangles, but this one is actually done in such a way that I only wanted to smack Lianne a couple times, so that’s a plus! However, there were other times that I felt she was seriously niave, but then had to remind myself that at the age of 16, answers can be staring you in the face and you would still not see them…because teenagers are young, blind, and stupid. Just because the world is such that 16 is older than it would be in our world, doesn’t mean that doesn’t apply. Alas, regardless of age, I still felt invested in the outcomes for all the characters!
In the end, the book was very enjoyable, keeping you wondering if and when it’s all going to turn out ok right to the last word. The characters are compelling, the conflict so strang that you don’t always know what side to be on, and just plainly, Sleepers is a thrill ride that will keep you glued to the page until there’s nothing left! Definitely worth reading for any YA fantasy romance fan!”
“This is a very unique story. I love how three children were chosen from their homeland to be adopted by their conquering foes to be raised as their own as a peace offering. Lianne, Kellan & Bryden adopted by different residents of Fithia.
Kellan learned combat skills from his adoptive father, Aric, who also trained the palace army. Bryden injured at age five and left him with a limp, was book smart and had done bookkeeping for the residents of Fithia. Lianne, was a servant girl to the Queen, Mags, and helped to take care of Mags and her newborn son, Trevin.
Although, you don’t get to know Kellan and Bryden as much as you would like, you do discover that Lianne has a heart and you’re torn along with her when she discovers her secretive best friend, the Queen will be executed for her infidelity.
This book has several twists and turns which keep your interests going till the end, although some I may have seen coming, others I certainly did not.
This is the first book I have read from Megg Jensen and it certainly will not be the last!
“Not too shabby, but I couldn't identify with Lianne at all. She was so different and kind of cold, and very rash, that I just couldn't make a connection. I didn't even like her. That's kind of a damper. On the bright side, it made her interesting because I didn't really know what she'd do next (I did know that it would probably make me cringe, though). I enjoyed it.”Hannah K wrote this review Monday, June 11, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“This was a little slower read. Lianne is adopted into a royal family but never given any of the privelege. She embarks on a path that is unknown to her but will lead her back to the family she has never known. The question is, does she really want to know them? ”Bonnie Rediske wrote this review Tuesday, May 22, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“it took a while to really get into this book, but the strength and determination in the female MC was impressive. ”Dianne wrote this review Saturday, May 19, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“Sleepers is the latest novel from the author of The Cloud Trilogy, and the first in the new Swarm trilogy. Megg Jensen has the ability to create worlds and characters that, while fantasy, are so incredibly believable and real to the reader. Even the imagery of the tiniest details brings you in. There was a short passage in which Lianne is running barefoot outside and dust settles over her feet. Such a tiny detail, but I was so into the story that I swear I could feel the dust on my own feet. To me, that is the mark of a truly wonderful writer, one that can make you feel a story.
Lianne is one of three Dalagan children given to the Fithians as a symbol of peace between the two formerly warring kingdoms. Lianne is the queen's favorite handmaiden, who is Lianne's only real friend among the Fithians. Kellan has been fostered by the armsman and is the boy who Lianne has always dreamed of. The third Dalagan is Bryden, once Lianne's closest friend, now holding himself apart from his fellow countrymen. I absolutely loved Lianne from the start. She is a strong girl, but one that had all of the normal doubts of any woman. I loved the fact that she was a warrior, one that was even stronger than almost anyone in the kingdom!
The twists and turns in this book were unbelievable! Just as soon as I thought I knew where the story was going, something huge would happen and change everything. It is almost impossible to talk about all of those twists and turns without giving away the story line and taking away from the sheer joy of reading this book. Those twists and turns and never knowing what was going to happen made Sleepers so fabulous that I didn't want it to end. And the ending,...? Totally NOT what I expected!
Magic, intrigue, suspense, mystery, friendship, love, betrayal,... this book has everything! Run, don't walk, and buy this amazing book! As much as I love Anathema and Oubliette, I think Sleepers just may be my new favorite!
