I thought it was a little unrealistic that Max lived through the war after all the people in the neighborhood died in that bomb raid. Go figure. ”

You get to know the characters very well and become attached to them so it's like losing a person when they die. I loved how Max came back after the war to Liesel and that makes her feel so much better that he survived the Holocaust.”

Zusack managed to transport me into Liesel’s world. It’s an interesting read, and as a lover of books, you can’t help but feel for Liesel. It makes one think, though - Liesel loves her books. It’s not the cliche of wanting to devour as many books as possible, she loves one book at a time and moves from book to book, loving all of them like relatives. At the beginning of the book, she’s illiterate, so she has to learn to read in order to read the book she has.
The book is set in Nazi Germany, in the years before and during the second world war. I think the book promises more than it delivers, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy reading it. It was simply that the plot had the opportunity to tug at me a lot more than it did.
