Ok, the book leaves it open and doesn't say who Liesel marrys in the end. When I read the book I just assumed that she married some random guy she met later in life, but my friend said that she assumed that she marries Max. What do you think? Do Liesel and Max get married?

At first I was pissed when Death revealed bits of the end. I absolutely despise spoilers, then nearing the end I realized that had he not, the ending would have had less impact. He was right, it's all about seeing how things fell into place, about the mechanics. Suspense would have made this book a flop.

I also liked that Death told us who was going to die, it added to the feeling of sadness to see them going about their everyday life not realising what was ahead for them. It surprised me at first but I found it more intriguing to know before the characters did, it also highlighted that no-one was safe and made me hope for the survival of some of them. For some I felt relieved that they'd survived, for others I felt a lot of sadness that they didn't survive.

I liked that Death seemed human, there was caring and compassion for those he had to take and anger at those who were causing him so much work.

I was in tears at the end, for those who had died and also for those who survived and went on to live their lives. i do think it should be on everyone's bookshelf.

What dod you guys think about Death coming right out and saying who was going to die? Did you like that or would you have rather had the suspense?

I found that I payed more attention to details since I already knew how it would eventually end up. Maybe knowing that characters we really liked were going to die in the end made them even more vibrant and precious? Maybe Zusak is trying to comment on life and death without coming right out and saying it?
