“...it didn't move me.
Before I began reading it, I was curious about how this novel could have accrued so many accolades...and yet also, some really scathing reviews. The book's blurbs were *so* effusive. It seemed like reading it was going to be a real experience for me, a truly transcendent experience.
It wasn't. On either count.
It's well-written.
Its often pithy and almost point-form style makes the subject matter easier to process. (Not that I needed it to be; I'm an adult reading a piece of young adult literature.)
And the characters are almost all interesting and well-shaped.
But it wasn't a memorable story. I didn't find myself not wanting to put it down. In fact, I found myself in 'dutiful reader' mode.
I'm glad that this story was written. I'm glad that so many people have clutched it to their chests. And I'm glad for the author's success.
It just didn't do it for me...regardless of its category.

“This book was recommended to me and I enjoyed reading it. I have never read a book from deaths perspective. I felt like I was riding along with him from above as he told Lesile's Story.”
An amazon user wrote this on 2009-11-12.“The Book Thief is a story and characters I will not soon forget. Although fictitious, young Liesel Meminger takes her rightful place alongside Anne Frank. And there's Rosa and Hans Hubermann, Rudy Steiner, the mayor's wife, and Max Vandenburg. Hans's accordion is almost a character itself. The first half of the book often moves slowly, but staying with it is rewarding. Narrated by Death, even Death is moved when required to collect some of these characters' souls. I can't recall the last time a writer's words brought me to tears, but the final few chapters were blurred reading.

“This book is one of the best I've read this year - maybe the last 5 years. There are so many stories that touch on WWII and are filled with pathos and simply have you crying from start to finish. This book avoids that while still recognizing the serious nature of the subject matter.
I recommend to all my friends.”
“I read this book because it was recommended by Amazon as being similar to four other books I loved. I thought I was on a roll of finding new authors and books based on Amazon's recommendations. I read 'The Thirteenth Tale' by Diane Setterfield, 'The House at Riverton' and 'The Forgotten Garden' by Kate Morton and 'The Time Traveler's Wife' by Audrey Niffenegger and loved all of them. The first three, though modern, had the same gothic fiction feel as 'Jane Eyre' and 'Wuthering Heights'. I was hoping to find more books in this genre, as the Brontes are no longer writing.
This book was not at all what I was expecting. I read it, and I can see why some people would love it, but it was not what I was looking for.
Others have written about the book itself, I just wanted to state that if you are considering reading this book based on Amazon's recommendation for liking books similar to the ones above, then this book may not be for you.”
