My teacher was too concern of the details instead of looking at what the book is teaching us of the Philippine culture. I thoroughly enjoyed it when I read it again 10 years or so after high school.” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“Rizal's first of two parts novel. I like the Noli better than the El Filibusterismo. But the book is still a copy cat work of Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“A good book that will rekindle your love for your country. Especially if you're Filipino. You'll feel hatred in every treachery and cowardness and all the lies the "bad" people said. You'll be happy to know that the "good" character was able to surpass the challenges his enemies bestowed upon him and that he outwitted them. I loved Elias. He's the MY perfect representation of a hero.”

As one of the 3rd year students in the Philippines, I studied the book quite thoroughly. Thank God I had a knowledgeable and energetic teacher who helped me appreciate this national novel all the more.”

For me its a little bit of "The Count of Monte Cristo" like novel but with a lots of drama and controversy!!! ”

Yes | No“"One only dies once, and if one does not die well, a good opportunity is lost and will not present itself again." Thus writes author Jose Rizal in an 1890 letter to his friend Mariano Ponce. And this perhaps best summarizes the theme of this famous Philippine novel, one that ultimately resulted in author Rizal being executed by the Spanish in 1896. However the focus of this novel seems to be most directed towards the abuse power by the Civil Guard and Roman Catholic Church hierarchy. Rizal uses all of his literary powers, and his well-developed cynical humor, to portray the effects of the abuse of these powers and the ensuing injustice under Spanish rule.”
