“This is a story about healing. Exorcising the demons we all acquire when a relationship of passion falls to the wayside. It is about three people finding a path to redemption and love. Ms. Hill has a way of telling these stories with grace and insight. She makes the reader feel the anguish and the hurt that these three damaged souls have endured. She writes characters that are flawed just as so many of us are yet they come out the other end of the story renewed and ready to grab life my the horns and ride it. You come to love the characters and cheer them on through each hoop they jump through on the path to a better place.
Lauren, Marcus and Joshua were the first characters of Ms. Hill's that I enjoyed sharing with her. I read the story just shortly after it was published by Ellora's Cave all those many years ago. I haven't re-read the story in all that time. These story strike so close to home they can be painful in some ways to read. I love them make no mistake but I have to read them in a measured pace. I have always thought that was the measure of a great book. Ms. Hill book pull out things in me that I wish that I could experience and know that it will never happen. I want those things so badly but I know that I will not find someone that I can trust to share those experiences with.
This is the first time that Marcus shows up in any of Ms. Hill's story. He intrigued me so much. I am not a big fan of M/m romances. I usually need and female added into the mixture to really enjoy the story. However I loved reading Marcus' story. A review that I will save for a later time. Lauren and Josh have both gone through so much pain. Even with the second reading I am rushing to the end to see how things will resolve themselves. Wanting to know what has caused Josh such pain that he is angry and hurt so deeply.
Well I have finished the story and the ending had me in tears. I am reminded yet again that there are some truly vile people in the world. What Josh's wife did to him is unforgivable. She needs hep and lots of it. Jonathan is the same. I know that Jonathan finally has to face his demons and find redemption as he does so. I wish that there was some similar punishment for Josh's wife but maybe she is beyond redemption. I do love that Ms. Hill left open the possibility for Marcus and Thomas to get back together. I also glad that Lauren and Josh were ready to find a way to make a life for themselves. This is a very good story and for those that love the BDSM genre it is a must read. A warning for the rest this is a deeply emotional book that has very strong D/s elements that some will find disturbing. There is also one scene of M/M sexual contact for those of you that find that not to your taste.”

“I am not homophobic and I do not have anything against gays but MM just doesn't do it for me. I did find the bond between Joshua and Marcus both fascinating and touching and I wouldn't be averse to forming that kind of friendship with another guy, gay or straight, minus the sex. I also appreciated the author's successful efforts in setting the mood with her vivid descriptions of the island and the houses and the rooms in them; she is clearly a talented writer. I also found her knowledge about the D/s relationship, particularly the Domme psyche, very interesting and I admit it added depth to the story. While I enjoy foreplay, even extended ones, and I understand that it makes the actual sex and the climax all the more intense, I still wish there were a lot more sizzling hot, wild, and rough sex in the story. Given how powerful the sexual attraction between Lauren and Joshua was, ohh it could've made for a lot of exciting, mind-blowing, earth-shattering action. That said, I still enjoyed reading this book and would be reading the rest in this series. ”mikechagnon wrote this review Tuesday, October 2, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? “I can't wait to get started on the next book in the series. I've read several other erotica books but this is the first that not only excited me sexually but also stirred me emotionally. I really appreciate how the author was able to get more in-depth with the characters' emotional and psychological makeup and motivations. She did it so well that I couldn't help but empathize with them. The book wasn't filled with titillating sex scenes in every chapter but it wasn't a disappointment at all because the story was a drawn-out foreplay that she expertly built up in intensity until I reached the explosive and very satisfying climax. Can't wait for the next ride!”mayyoung wrote this review Thursday, September 20, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“This book gave me a different kind of erotic reading experience. It wasn't just an arousing journey, but also emotional. Ms. Hill knew how to play the cards right, so to speak. The back stories of the main character really pulled at my heartstrings and made both protagonists more believable and appealing. I wish there was a lot more sex, though, especially given how crafty the author was with her imagery. But the climax she deliberately built up to slowly but surely was nothing short of exhilarating, so it was worth the prolonged sensual torment.”tashapinelas wrote this review Thursday, September 20, 2012. “Since I love Hill's VQ series and saw that Holding the Cards is FREE right now for Nook (and Kindle) I'd give one of her other series a try. I just finished Holding the Cards and it was pretty good but it kind of dragged on during some parts. But still a good read if you are a BDSM fan. It's on the lighter side of the genre.”Jennifer (a.k.a The Book Nympho) wrote this review Wednesday, February 15, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“FemDom not my favorite thing but the emotional journey was so sweet and intense that I didn't care. Lauren and Josh were two halfs of a whole, damaged by their previous lovers and healed by BDMS. Enjoyed seeing Marcus from Rough Canvas here but felt he didn't need to be here. Not crazy about manage scenes. Close male relationship with Marcus and Josh with no sexual heat so I wasn't clear as to why they needed to have sex. Besides that, very enjoyable read.”SaturnNalia wrote this review Friday, March 18, 2011. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“A dom and a sub, both emotionally injured in previous relationships, come together and heal each other. Very tightly written. Strong emotions on both sides. Wonderful.”Sheila G wrote this review Tuesday, February 22, 2011. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“its going to be good
“It's not often that BDSM erotica features a strong female protagonist. I enjoyed that aspect very much. I wish there was more erotica out there from the Domme perspective instead of from the Dom perspective. This is probably the only work of BDSM erotica that I would actually recommend to a lifestyle Dominatrix.”Chantam Hex wrote this review Saturday, July 18, 2009.
