I remember this book even though I read it five years ago. Simply amazing!

Jonas is a boy living in a society that has no pain, fear, war, or hate. There is no jealousy, because everyone looks and acts the same. At age twelve, every person in the community is given a job. Citizens can get spouses, and two children each. The children are born to Birth mothers, who can never see them, and stay first year in a Nurturing Center with other babies. Once the citizens are too old they are sent to the House of the Old until they are released from the society. In the community, release is death, but nobody is told that, most people think that after release, sick children and old people are sent to Elsewhere.

This book would have been a five star if I hadn't read it every month or so since I was was 11. I'll be finished reading it in about an hour, more or less. I will always recommend this book.

I thought this book was rather deep, but well written...I love the message it portrays, but It's very sad...a classic.
