At last, after a dry summer's worth of reading, something worthwhile! A must read for anyone who has ever wondered why there has to be pain, sorrow or choice in this life!

For a childrens book this was kind of dark, and the themes were deeper than any I have encountered in any other childrens book.. the endurance of memory, the necessity of preserving knowledge of one's heritage, and how lives are worthless without them.

Many years ago I was asked to read this book for a college course, to this day I think of the characters and the plot. What a mind Lowery must have to create such world!

"The Giver" has been one of my favorites since I first read it in fifth grade. Over the years I re-read the book several times and each time that I read it I notice more and and understand more. This book is absolutely beautiful.

A wonderful, fantastic book full of interesting topics for discussion. This is another one that I teach to my university classes because there's so much grey area where ideologies crash and contradict. Wonderful discussion starter.

Good book but not an epic IMO. It is creative but the ending is terrible and could have been better.

Interesting story, it had me hooked after a few pages. However, I believe it rushed a little towards the end and kind of fell apart and ran out of steam.

This was one of the hardest books I ever read.
The complex meanings and hidden reasons really get a person thinking.
Though things in the story might seem wrong and cruel, but through that it shows the strange ways that people think.
It really gives you the sense of the truth of life.
Never have I read such a deep and dark book.

One of my favorite children's novels, The Giver twists our definition of utopia and is creative and vibrantly detailed. Jonas is a twelve-year-old boy in a very utopian society. Everyone gets the same things as everyone else, and there is no overwelming joy, but also no pain. One lives for the community, and takes what the community offers them in return. But through his unique job assignment as Receiver, Jonas realizes there are better ways to live than that of what they have been. He realizes the truth of pain, war, and death, but also of love, passion, and joy. Jonas is given a decision: to leave the society as it is, or to try to end the system the people have, which could end up destroying them all. The Giver is very thought-provoking, and left me pondering long after it was finished.

The Giver is a great book that is frightening, confusing but understandable, and heart-warming. All at the same time. The book is partcially about that to love is important in life.
