The Giver is about war fear and or pain. Jonas is living a normal life until he turns 12 years old and then he has to start doing stuff with the community. He has two parents a mother who works at department of Justice and has a father who works at a nurturer. He also has a younger sister who is Lily.
When ever you turn 12 and you are living in this community you get a role in the community. Which means that you are now considered an adult. Jonas as been waiting 12 hole years to see what his assignment or role is in the community and he can't wait. He's been getting special training from the Giver. The elders recognize his intelligence and courage to everybody and he has the ability to see . He has the the ability to see colors and he also been selected to become the next Receiver of Memory. When he is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory. His life instantaneously altered and he is always doing something. He is now separated from his friends but he had no way of preparing for this and for the challenges that he will start to go thru. When they are at the Ceremony of the twelve in front of all his friends and his family, that his training will involve pain. Physical pain that nobody can understand because it is beyond there experience.
When he gets his first training instructions he learns that he's no longer allowed to share any dreams with anyone and that he may lie if he wants to. Everything to him feels like his world has been flipped upside down. The only person who understands his fears is the current Receiver of Memory which is the Giver. The Giver is now started to transmit his memories to Jonas now. Here are a couple of things that the Giver gives to Jonas they are snow, sledding and sun there are a lot more though.

When Jonas turns 12, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. Now, it’s time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.back. Everybody has a role to do in the community when ever they turn 12 years old of age.
