“Summary: The book is written in a place where there are no emotions because there is one person who controls them all in his mind. In this world each person is given a job and in this book the boy Jonas is given the job of the memory keeper. He then has all the images of the different memories that happened in the past. The story discusses the experience that Jonas faces while dealing with family problems and his life as the memory keeper.Reason Chosen: This book is a classic and I feel that it is written so uniquely. I think that reading it as a younger student it is given so much detail you can bring so much of the book to life. Many students have very vivid imaginations and with the story so creatively written it can bring those imaginations to life.Use in Classroom: I would use this story as a group project. I think that some of the parts in this story can be hard to grasp as a student without help of others. I believe that you can have the students work together to help each other through parts that some might struggle with. Also, you can bring a lot of good conversation into the classroom when dealing with a very unique story.”
“I originally thought he died. There are several things in those last pages that suggest death, but at the same time there is a lot that suggests rebirth. Of course death could be viewed as a kind of rebirth... so it's tough to be certain. ”
“Did you think that Jonas and Gabe lived or died at the end? ”
“a really good book...changes perspective about life”
“This book taught me to cherish my memories. I would recommend it to anyone who wanted a good book to read.”
“ZZThe Giver is a very great book and consists of 192 pages of pure suspense! The book is amazing because it makes me wanting to keep reading and is very interesting. Jonas (the main character) and other minor characters live in a society that is based on perfection. The people in the society (similar to that of Fahrenheit 451) cannot feel pain, happiness, sadness, dismay, anger, or any real, strong emotions. Then, when Jonas turns twelves years of age, he is given an assessment and is assigned to the Giver. There, Jonas figures out that his society is not right to shield the people from truths that should be known. Jonas wants to live somewhere else and runaway with the little baby. This book may have been banned because there are some controversial topics such as the "releasing" of imperfect people in the society. Jonas find out that this mysterious "releasing" is killing or taking away. Also, in this book the society kills babies, elderly people, one of two twins, and anything that isn't perfect. Also, there is a little bit of suggestive language. In the end, this is a very good book and I would recommend it to anyone because it is very compelling and suspenseful. Every page that is turned is a thriller.”
