In this book there is one main character named "Ji-Li Jiang". She and her family are going through the cultural revolution and the time of Mao-Ze Dong. She is considered born into a black family and her father is detained. She thought her life was perfect before she found out her family was a black family and her grandfather was a landlord. Her best friend "An-Yi" was also in a black family. They were made fun of becuase they were born into a family that were not loyal to the communist party or a black family. They had to learn about algriculture at school after she started Junior High School. She could have gotten into the best Junior High school in Shanghai but instead because of the cultural revolution she had to go to the same Junior High School everyone in her compound was going to. It is an exciting book about the cultural revolution. The "4 Olds" Old religion, Old ways, Old style and Old beliefs.
