I love the creativity behind this book, and how it reminds students' to always dream big no matter the circumstances. I enjoyed Nick's character, because of how creative he was. Nick always seems to want to push the envelope, but in a good way. He was a trend setter. This book is a good read.

This book will help my students learn how to dream big, we could have an invention idea day and they could write their own book about their inventions. I thought this was a great book just because it has a kid think of an idea and he follows through on it and it happens.

Characters/People edit see section history

  • Nick Allen: Fifth grader, tries to be rebellious by calling a pen a "frindle."
  • Mrs. Granger: Nick's teacher. She seems against the idea of calling a pen a frindle because she loves the dictionary and proper use of language.
  • Room 4: Students in a year 3 - 4 class at Lawrence Area School in New Zealand
  • Judy Morgan: Smart kid in the 5th grade. Still reading this so I can't comment any more.
  • Mrs. Granger: 5th grade teacher for the past 30 years. Set in her ways and beliefs. Appears old and rough. Has a monopoly on the language class as she is the only teacher for this subject, all the other subjects have two. At the end, we find out her methods were to get the results she had hoped for. That was to get Nick to be all he can be and more. Like she said, in every story there has to be a bad person, and she chose to be that person. She was a great person, one that could see the good, even if they were some what bad.
  • MRS. MARGARET CHATHAM: The principle of Lincoln Elementary School where Nick's goes and is not fond of Nick's new word and the way it is making everyone act.
  • Bud Lawrence: He's the guy that makes all of the frindle supplies: t-shirts, pens, notebooks, etc.
  • Nick: ultimate teacher time waster
  • Nick Allen: nick is creative because when it was picture day he made everyone say frindle not cheese

  • When Nick ran into a word he didn’t know, he asked his brother or his dad or whoever was handy what it meant, and if they knew, they’d tell him. But not Mrs. Granger. He had heard all about her, and he had seen fifth graders in the library last year, noses stuck in their dictionaries, frantically trying to finish their vocabulary sheets before English class. It was still a week before school and Nick already felt like fifth grade was going to be a very long year.
