Not only was he a man of letters, as a teacher he influenced both Edward Abbey and Wendell Berry. Stegner died in 1993, at the age of 83. Crossing to Safety was his last novel. I thought it was time to read one of Stegner's books and learn more about him; I was not disappointed. And a man on the plane told me I was reading Stegner's best novel. ”

His characters are real people and the details of their lives ring true and profound. One knows from a description of a family picnic exactly what the lives of these people are like -- what they eat and how they dress and how they regard intellect and wealth. There are no good guys or bad guys here, just real people who do as they must by biology and upbringing. This is an important work, a portrait of American life that is now mostly gone. Grade: A”

It's a character-driven book, not a plot-driven book. Main characters spent time as undergrads at UW Madison in the 50s ... but other than that, I had no personal connection to this story. But, oh, my, how I loved it. When I finished it, I read it again. Then, read it a couple of years later and loved it still. I don't know if it was the lyricism in the book, or the bittersweet themes of friendships and aging ... but this one is definately a keeper. This was the beginning of my Stegner adventure.”
